Developing mathematical models for alzheimer’s research: the path of alumnus Dylan Esguerra
Baskin Engineering alumnus Dylan Esguerra (M.S., Statistics, ’23) discovered his passion for statistics as a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz. Dylan pursued the 4+1 Statistical Science Program and had the opportunity to work with Adjunct Professor of Applied Mathematics Steve Munch to develop an algorithm for predicting animal populations over time.

Keerthi Koneru is a UC Santa Cruz class of 2024 computer science Ph.D. graduate. Drawn to UCSC’s Computer Science and Engineering Department for its focus on combining conceptual learning with practical application, her research focused on securing electrical substations against cyber threats by analyzing real-world vulnerabilities and developing tools to study malware interactions.

Anuj Kumar was a member of Baskin Engineering’s 25th graduating class, earning a Ph.D. in applied mathematics in June 2023. During his time at UC Santa Cruz, he worked under the guidance of Professor Pascale Garaud conducting research in fluid dynamics.

Alec Dektor is a quadruple UC Santa Cruz alumnus (B.A. math; M.A. math; M.S. scientific computing and applied mathematics; Ph.D. applied mathematics). During his time at Baskin Engineering, he published six papers—four as first author.

Haofan Cai is a class of 2023 graduate, who completed her Ph.D. in computer science and engineering. Harika Dechiraju is designing bioelectronic devices for real-world applications
Harika Dechiraju’s interest in using electronic devices for biomedical applications led her to pursue a doctoral program in electrical and computer engineering at Baskin Engineering. Since 2017, Dechiraju has been a part of Professor Marco Rolandi’s research group.
